RV Maintenance FAQs

General Service

What Maintenance Should I Perform Before a Trip?

Before you take your RV on a long road trip, you should complete all of your routine maintenance tasks, such as:

  • Checking and refilling tire pressure and replacing or patching tires as necessary
  • Examine and test the batteries and electrical systems to ensure everything’s fully charged and functioning
  • Top off any fluids
  • Test the brakes and suspension
  • Ensure the plumbing is in proper working order
  • Check the exterior for any cracks or leaks
  • Test the HVAC system and confirm that it’s working properly

Do I Need to Service my Towable RV?

All RVs require maintenance, including towable ones. Towable RVs don’t require service for motorized components like other types of RVs, but still require routine inspections and maintenance for electrical components, plumbing, and tires, as well as ensuring the exterior is sealed.

When to Service my Motorized RV?

Even if it hasn't seen the road that often, you should service a motorized RV at least once a year, so inactivity doesn’t degrade your RV’s systems.

When is the Best Time to Winterize my RV?

It’s best to winterize your RV before temperatures begin to hit freezing, which is usually in early autumn. This helps keep your vehicle from unexpectedly freezing and aids in preventing damage to the internal systems from the cold.

When is the Best Time to De-Winterize my RV?

On the other hand, you should de-winterize your RV when the temperature consistently is no longer in the freezing range, normally in the early spring.

Electrical, Plumbing, and Power Systems

Why are my RV Outlets Not Working?

The most common reasons are that either the GFCI or the converter outlets have been tripped, so run through your outlets and test them to find the root of the problem. Alternatively, your RV’s battery could have died or you may have possibly blown a fuse or tripped a breaker.

How Long Do RV Batteries Last?

The average RV battery lasts from three to five years, but this can vary depending on the specific model, amount of use, and the type of battery.

What Should I Do if Tank Levels are Not Reading Correctly?

RV tanks usually misread their levels because of removable debris, which hold enough moisture to connect the liquid lower in the tank with the “ground” sensor. This can also be because of mineral deposits, wiring, or control problems.

Roof, Seals, and Exterior

How Often Should I Reseal My RV Roof?

It’s generally only necessary to reseal the roof every two to four years, depending on the weather your RV is generally subjected to.

How Often Should Slide-Out Seals Be Maintained?

Slide-Out seals need maintenance twice a year, or every six months, where you reapply rubber seals that keep out moisture. Neglecting this can lead to mold or possible water leak issues if not addressed.

What Should I Do if I Have a Leak?

For leaks on the exterior of the RV, locate the source and seal it with caulk. If a leak is more persistent or you otherwise can’t find its point of origin, don’t be afraid to schedule an appointment at an RV service center. Ask your Service Advisor about a SEALTECH Pressure Test to diagnose your leak issues.

Brakes and Tires

How Long Do RV Tires Last?

It’s commonly recommended to replace RV tires after five to seven years, depending on the amount of use and the quality of the tires in the first place. Even if they appear to be in good condition after ten years, the components of the tire have still likely degraded over time.

What Type of RV Service Do I Need if My RV is Pulling to One Side?

If your vehicle feels unstable or pulls to one side, your RV likely needs a wheel or axle alignment to restore handling. Alternatively, your braking system could also need to be replaced.

When Should I Replace My RV Brakes?

RV brakes generally should be replaced or serviced once a year or after driving 12,000 miles (whichever comes first). This may commonly be after a big trip. Additionally, look out for obvious signs your RV needs new brakes, such as:
  • Grinding or squealing sounds when applying the brakes
  • Vibrations in the steering wheel or brake pedal
  • Increased stopping distances
  • Vehicle pulling to one side
  • Spongy feeling on the brake pedal
  • Burning smell after braking
